Jonathon Schuch - Biographical Sketch
Mr. Schuch is a Licensed Professional Engineer and, prior to his retirement in March 2021, was an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at the University of Virginia, was the Director of Occupational Health and Wellness, and was the Health System's rehabilitation engineer. Mr. Schuch earned his B.S. degree in Biological Sciences from North Carolina State University in 1981 and his Master of Engineering degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1984. For the past 37 years, Mr. Schuch has been actively involved in service delivery, education, and research related to assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering, with an emphasis on wheelchair seating and positioning. Mr. Schuch has developed and delivered more than 40 seminars on wheelchair seating and positioning throughout the U.S. In addition, he co-authored the University of Pittsburgh’s curriculum for the Assistive Technology Training Program for Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers, as well as the NIDRR-funded "Guidelines for Advanced Curriculum Development for Seating and Mobility Assistive Technology Practitioners." Mr. Schuch’s particular interests include: development of new seating technologies (front-latch subasis hardware, dynamic footrests, automatic wheelchair brake locks, CAD seating applications); seating interventions for individuals with extremely complex seating problems (multiple decubiti, severe amputation, significant contractures, extensive tone); and, perhaps most importantly, teaching and learning about assistive technology applications.
As the Director of Occupational Health and Wellness, Mr. Schuch was actively involved in improving employee safety at the University of Virginia and for employers within Central Virginia. For example, Mr. Schuch implemented a medical massage therapy program for medical sonographers to minimize the prevalance of repetitive strain injury. He co-led an interdisciplinary team to evaluate the principle causes of patient handling injuries at the University of Virginia and to implement assistive devices to minimize the risk of injury. Mr. Schuch significantly contributed to the University of Virginia's response to COVID-19, to minimize the spread of the disease among employees, students, and patients. Mr. Schuch's team within Employee Health was responsible for managing employees with COVID-19 symptoms, evaluating Health System employee exposures, placing employees on quarantine or isolation, and clearing employees to return to work. Mr. Schuch was also a co-leader in the planning and implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination program at the University of Virginia, which resulted in the vaccination of 15,000 employees in less than 3 months.
Mr. Schuch also served as the Director of Rehabilitative Therapies (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology) at the University of Virginia from 2007 - 2012, where he helped implement new therapeutic practices and technologies, expand extramural funding of clinical research, and recruit clinical specialists.
